Your average zone is
calculated by the lowest temperature you get during the winter. This determines what
plants will survive in your area. As an example many willows and species of thyme will
survive in a zone 2 climate and are hardy to -50 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course we can fool
mother nature by creating micro-climates!
